Writing Your Own News

In addition to (or instead of) importing news from www.caltech.edu, you can write your own news articles and In the Media items.
The news you write on your site will be interleaved with the news you import from www.caltech.edu. On the News Hub page and in News Blocks, articles are ordered based on the "first published at" field in the Publishing tab. This will default to the actual publishing date for the article, but if you need to, you can edit that date.
News Pages
The first step for displaying news — yours or imported from www.caltech.edu — is to add a News Hub page. In addition to being the place for users to see all the news items for this site, this page will serve as the parent for your own news stories.
To add a news story, locate your News Hub page in the Sitemap, hover over it and choose "Add News Article". Or you can look in the "News" item in the admin sidebar, choose "All Articles", then "Add a Child Page".
Choose a Layout
When you get to the body field, you need to decide on your overall layout. The three options are:
- Right Sidebar Layout
- Right Sidebar with Assets Layout
- Video Only Layout
If your news consists of a video, and only a video, choose "Video Only Layout" and fill in the video's embed url. If you want your news article to match news imported from pre-2019 versions of www.caltech.edu, choose Right Sidebar with Assets Layout. But for 'normal' news, start with Right Sidebar Layout. Right Sidebar Layout will give you access to all the same blocks you see used in news stories on www.caltech.edu.
Attach a Teaser Image
The image shown on the News Hub page is called the Teaser Image. If you don't include one, the system will display an aerial image of Caltech's campus. To replace this with something specific to your news article, go the the "Teasers" tab and select an image from your collection, or upload a new one for this article.
The other fields on this tab are used to control the display of your pages when they are shared on social media. For more information, please see Preferences: Social Media.
Publications Tab
News Pages have a fourth item in the settings tabs at top of the page: Publishing. This is where you can set the date used for sorting news items on your NewsHub page and where you can choose Display Locations that can be used to configure News Carousels, etc.
Please note: the publication date only affects the date displayed on the NewsPage and how items are sorted in a news listing. Scheduled publishing is controlled by the publishing schedule item in the information sidebar.
