News Teaser Block
One of the most useful features of Caltech Sites is the ability it gives you to reuse news articles written by the Office of Strategic Communications for www.caltech.edu while still being able to author news articles yourself using the same building blocks you see on www.caltech.edu. Creating news articles of your own is covered in "Writing Your Own News" and importing selected news from www.caltech.edu is covered in "Managing Imported News". News from both sources will automatically be interleaved in chronological order on your NewsHub page.
But sometimes you want to highlight specific news items in specific contexts, for example listing items tagged "awards and honors" on your "about the division" page. Or you may want to split news with a given sync tag into more specific disciplines and then display those news items on the discipline's subpage. To place a set of articles on a HomePage or InteriorPage, you will use the News Teasers Listing Block. The example below is the News from the Caltech Home page.
The editing interface for the News Teasers Listing block is shown below. Title, number of articles, and number of columns are self-explanatory. If you want to place news in a narrow column, chose "Vertical Layout" from the Style menu.
The Location, Tag, and Category options are how you choose which articles to display in this block. If you do not choose any of the three, this block will just show the most recent n articles on your News Hub page. If you configure one of these options, you will get the most recent n articles that match your selection. For example, if you choose "awards and honors" from the Category section, you will show articles from www that were tagged with that category PLUS any articles you have written on your site that you also tagged with that category. Location and Tag behave similarly.
You should probably only use one of Location, Tag, or Category. If you choose more than one criterion, you will get articles that match all of the criteria select. For example if you choose Category: awards and honors AND Location: Home Page, you will only get stories that have the awards and honors category AND a display location of Home Page. That is fine if that is what you want, but it may be confusing to your later. If you find that you need to set more than one criteria, you may want to consider creating a more specific tag, category or location that will allow you to choose the desired news without using more than one selector.
